Skagit County Department of Emergency Management

Mission Statement

The Skagit County Department of Emergency Management is committed to improve disaster, preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation efforts within Skagit County and the cities/towns of Anacortes, Burlington, Concrete, Hamilton, La Conner, Lyman, Mount Vernon, and Sedro-Woolley.

Goals

Maintain a workable emergency management plan.
Encourage and facilitate interagency cooperation and coordination.
Maintain and staff an effective emergency operations center.
Disseminate warning information to first responders, the public, governmental agencies, and major industries.
Actively promote school, government, and citizen disaster preparedness and self-sufficiency through public education programs such as the Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.) training program and other disaster preparedness and public education programs.
If needed, respond to emergency and/or disaster incidents to assist first response agencies with incident coordination, provide auxiliary communications, obtain outside resources, and transition from response to recovery activities.

The Skagit County Department of Emergency Management operates under the direction of the Skagit Emergency Management Council, comprised of the Board of County Commissioners and the Mayors of Anacortes, Burlington, Concrete, Hamilton, La Conner, Lyman, Mount Vernon, Sedro-Woolley.

During emergency or disaster events, the Skagit County Department of Emergency Management is responsible for activating and staffing the Skagit County Emergency Operations Center to assist in coordinating response activities, allocating resources, and facilitate recovery efforts.

The Skagit County Department of Emergency Management maintains regular contact with Shell, Tesoro, General Chemical, and Air Liquide through the March Point Community Awareness Emergency Response (C.A.E.R.) organization and the Skagit County Local Emergency Planning Committee (L.E.P.C.).
