Welcome to General Chemical's Anacortes Works. Our plant is located on North texas Road between the two March Point refineries. The 16.5-acre facility employs 35 people and serves customers throughout the northwestern United States and lower British Columbia. It was built in 1958 and has three sulfuric acid units and one sulfur recovery unit. It is part of General Chemical's network of over 50 plants that have made us an international supplier of over 200 specialty chemicals. We are North America's leading manufacturer of soda ash: the second highest volume industrial chemical in the world - sulfuric acid is the number one.

We are one of three plants in the Sulfur Products Business Group whose primary business is the support of petroleum refining. We have two other sulfuric acid plants which produce various product grades for all industries. At Anacortes we receive both acid gas containing hydrogen sulfide and spent sulfuric acid from the refineries. These raw materials are converted into fresh sulfuric acid, and a major portion is then returned to the refineries. Thus we are viewed as a pollution abatement facility and we contribute significantly to the environmental quality of life in Skagit Valley. Our product acid is used for automobile batteries, and effluent neutralization. It is a raw material for manufacture of pulp & paper products, aluminum sulfate, fertilizers, semi-conductors, etc.

General Chemical supports the community in a variety of ways and has been a leader in developing integrated emergency response programs at March Point. We are proud of our environmental, safety and health records and we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of performance. The Anacortes Works was the first sulfuric acid plant in General Chemical to become ISO-9000 registered.
